According to a recent study by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), 92% of nursing home facilities are employing at least one person who has a criminal conviction. Obtaining the identities of more than 35 thousand nursing home employees, the HHS submitted their names to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a criminal background check. In addition to the 92%, the FBI discovered almost half of nursing home facilities had at least five or more employees with one criminal conviction.
Said Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), “The current system of background checks is haphazard … Predators can easily evade detection during the hiring process, securing jobs that allow them to assault, abuse and steal from defenseless elders.”
